Description
Sennelier watercolour (just a little less than A4 size) of a red kite. The composition is my own as I used a reference photograph that I took myself.
This elegant bird of prey (Milvus milvus) has been saved from near extinction in the UK due to intense persecution from the 16th-18th Centuries as it was viewed as a pest to agriculture (despite being mainly a carrion eater). The great majority of today's British population are descended from a surviving population in mid-Wales, with 'fresh blood' supplemented from Europe.
I have been fortunate to see red kites in Wales (where I live, there are now over 600 breeding pairs), and it is amazing (and very heart warming) to see them circling the air currents with their distinctive forked tails.
